Willie Mae Groce, 71, of Greenfield, Indiana passed away on January 24, 2018. She was born August 8, 1946 in Burkesville, Kentucky to Willie Osby and Dimple Capps.
Mae married the love of her life, Norman Joe, January 4, 1961. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ. Family remembers Mae as the neighborhood grandma who took care of everyone around her. A woman strong in her faith, she never met a stranger and never let anyone do without. She loved providing for others, some family believes that’s why she often worked more than one job at a time. As a working mom in an era when most mothers stayed home, she was able to provide her family with a lot of the “extras” in life others couldn’t afford, making her children the envy of the neighborhood. As her children grew into adults and moved away from home, they remember her stopping by to check their refrigerators and pantries to ensure they had enough groceries. Though she loved providing for others, she did splurge on herself occasionally as she loved ice cream, specifically chocolate chip or butter pecan and Diet Pepsi. She was famous for her fried chicken and mashed potatoes and her love of Beanie Babies. Mae was the mother and grandmother others can only dream of having. She was truly one of a kind and will be greatly missed by everyone who had the honor of meeting her.
Mae is predeceased by her parents, Willie and Dimple; brother, Remus Capps (dec. 2014). Surviving to cherish her memory are, husband of 57 years, Norman; children, Steve (Lori) Groce, Robert (Jamie) Groce, Tina Walker, and Michael (Kelly) Groce; 11 grandchildren, Jeri (Cecil) Mains, Steven Groce Jr., Matt (Lacey) Groce, Melissa (Eric) Hudnall, Josh (Mallory) Groce, Tina (Kevin) Norcross, Sarah Walker, Teresa (Derek) Rick, Isaiah Groce, Taylor Groce, Kera Woodward; 16 loving great-grandchildren as well as a host of neighborhood grandchildren.
