Lydia Ritter, age 87, passed peacefully into eternal life surrounded by her children in the early morning hours of August 12. She was born May 24, 1930 to Robert and Katie Johnson in Scottsburg, Indiana. Lydia graduated from the IU School of Music and went on to teach music for a short time in IPS and later at St. Gabriel Catholic School. In addition to teaching music she directed choirs at St. Michael Catholic church and St. Gabriel. ‘One Family in Christ’ which Lydia composed became the theme of St. Gabriel. Her love of music spilled into all of her activities, including Speedway Musicale. Lydia was a sought after pianist/organist playing for many weddings, parties and the ISHAA women’s final four luncheon. She participated in Psi Iota Xi, Delta Beta Chapter, NPM, National Organist Association and Speedway Musicale. She served as President of her Psi Iota Xi chapter and Speedway Musicale groups. She and her husband Bill served as a sponsor couple for engaged couples for many years at St. Gabriel.
Lydia’s beloved husband, James William ‘Bill’ preceded her in death as well as her parents. Surviving are her children, Lisa (Paul) Dovey, Bob (Mary) Ritter, Julia (J) Holmes, and Bill (Nancy) Ritter, her grandchildren Julianna Holmes, Jenni (Carl) Shedd and Josh Holmes and 3 great grandchildren.
The family would like to extend thanks to the staff of Robin Run Assisted Living unit, Brookdale Hospice and Brookdale Personalized Living for their loving care of our mother during her final years and days.
Funeral services were entrusted to Flanner and Buchanan – Speedway. Calling will be at Flanner and Buchanan – Speedway, 2950 N. High School Road, on Wednesday, August 16, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 6000 West 34th Street, on Thursday, August 17, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. She will be laid to rest in Scottsburg, IN. Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. on August 17, 2017 at the Scottsburg Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Lyrics Alive, the Alzheimer’s Association or the Arthritis Foundation.
