Our father, Loyd K. Stump, MD passed away at Westminster Village North Retirement Center, on September 19, 2024 at the age of 97. He was born in Indianapolis to Corwin and Rua Stump as an only child on November 23, 1926.
He spent most summers on both sets of his grandparents’ Randolph County, Indiana farms. A review of his schoolboy report cards reveals a very good student who frequently was in trouble for talking too much. He graduated from Broad Ripple High School in 1944, Indiana University with a chemistry degree in 1947, and IU School of Medicine in 1950. He did 4 years of Internal Medicine training at various university medical centers; University of Texas at Galveston, Ohio State University in Columbus, and Indiana University in Indianapolis. During the Korean War Loyd did a 2 year stint in the Army from 1953-1955 in Washington, DC. While in Columbus he met a beautiful nurse and married our Mom, Peggy Anne Lee in 1952. Peggy passed away 2 years before our Dad after 60 years of marriage.
From their marriage came 6 boys born from 1953 to the last one on Loyd’s birthday in 1965. Loyd was survived by all his children, Robert (Patricia Kotylo, MD) Stump, MD, David (Serina Flores, MD) Stump, MD, Thomas (Karin Franzen, MD,PhD) Stump, William (Wendy Berelson) Stump, PhD, Steven (Tammy) Stump, John (CC Cooper) Stump. He was also survived by 12 grandchildren and one who predeceased him, Kevin Stump.
Loyd had many passions in his life fueled by his constant quest for knowledge. He pursued geology, anthropology, finances, and US history, particularly the Civil War. He was a Life Member of the SERTOMA Club of East Indianapolis. He enjoyed owning and shooting black powder muzzle loading rifles. His stories reflected his prides; his sons, his dogs and his many accomplished daughters-in-law and grandchildren.
He had a log cabin in the woods down in Brown County where he and Peggy spent nearly every weekend for over 30 years, sometimes stretching the weekend to 4 days. Various family dogs kept him company most of his adult life.
Dad channeled his most intense curiosity on what his sons, daughters-in-law and grandkids were doing. Never meddling, but frequently adding suggestions, he always showed interest in all our activities, especially our careers. He loved his work and his patients and kept working until age 84. By then he was living in the retirement community where he renewed his habit of frequently talking with others.
There was a private entombment for the family and a memorial service will be held at Westminster Village North at 2 pm on October 19, 2024. In lieu of flowers or gifts, consider a donation to the IU School of Medicine (www.iufoundation.iu.edu) and credit to the class of 1950.
