Linda Kay (Boyer) Cougill, 83, of Indianapolis, passed away suddenly on April 9th, 2025, from a complication of Parkinson’s disease. Linda was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on May 10th,1941, to parents, Paul and Aletha (Shickles) Boyer. She graduated from Howe High School and went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in physical education from Ball State University and began teaching at School 57 in Irvington. Shortly after graduation, she married the love of her life, Dr. Stephen Cougill, DDS. She raised their family of 3 boys mostly on the southeast side of Indianapolis, in Franklin Township, where she also taught and tutored second grade students at Acton Elementary for many years.
Linda was loved by her friends, family, coworkers and all the kids she taught over the years – at Acton Elementary and in Sunday School first at Acton United Methodist Church and then at Indian Creek Christian Church. She had a gift for connecting with children and encouraging them to learn lessons and Bible verses, often with candy bribery. She was a very active, competitive woman and it showed in exercise, her love of games, playing cards with friends, athletic competitions – hers, her children’s, and grandchildren’s – and in the extreme love of her family.
Over the years, as their children grew and studied and/or worked oversees, Linda and Steve enjoyed traveling to visit them and see more of the world. She developed fond memories and spoke often of travelling to England, Europe, Australia, and Thailand. After retirement, she and Steve especially enjoyed visiting friends and family in Arizona, New Mexico, Florida, and California. A cruise together to Alaska was one of her favorites. Linda was a very active member, Golden Girl (for 50+ year members), and local chapter President of P.E.O.—a sisterhood of women who are purposeful and passionate about celebrating, supporting and motivating women around the world through education. She frequently hosted traveling P.E.O. members, showed generous hospitality, and helped to raise money for scholarships to young women.
Linda was preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by her loving husband Stephen of 61 years, her 3 boys Scott (Cathren), Eric (Meghan) and Drew (Jennifer) Cougill, 12 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held at a future date. Linda will be cremated and laid to rest next to her parents at Washington Park East Cemetery in Indianapolis.
