Lecta Susan “Sue” Hammer, 88, of Indianapolis, passed away on Tuesday, November 16, 2021. She was born on October 28, 1933, in Tompkinsville, Monroe County, Kentucky to the late Joseph and Neacy (Gentry) Johnson.
She married Floyd Reed Hammer on December 12, 1951, in Livingston, Tennessee and they were married until his death on April 12, 2011. She worked for P.R. Mallory’s 1953-1954 and then for Western Electric 1954-1959 where she was a member of the Five Watters Radio Club. She was then a fulltime homemaker until 1981 when she worked for Lawrence Township Schools in the Lawrence North High School cafeteria, retiring in 1985.
At the time of her death, she was a beloved member of the Fishers church of Christ congregation.
Sue was first and foremost a Christian, having put on Christ in baptism for the remission of her sins as a young girl. When she was no longer able to physically attend worship services, she put on her “Sunday go to meeting clothes” and worshipped with her congregation via livestream from her apartment.
She loved being a wife, mother, Grandma and MawMaw. Her greatest fulfillment came from caring for and being with her family.
She loved birds, especially hummingbirds. She enjoyed being with her family and church friends and made new friends everywhere she went. She looked forward to her first sip of coffee in the morning, Popeye’s chicken nuggets, Panera Bread chicken chipotle flatbread pizza, and Sundae’s black walnut ice cream. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and had several hats that she enjoyed wearing. She liked dressing up, having her hair and nails done, and wearing one of her dressy hats.
She will be remembered by her neighbors and friends in Lawrence & One Penrose Place as someone always there to listen, give encouragement, share some funny stories or share her faith.
Sue is survived by her children Phyllis Kaye Wilson, Theresa “Terri” Faye (Bob) Anderson, Melody Sue (Tim) Biddle; daughter-in-law, Jill Ann Hammer Harden; grandchildren Christopher Allen Chaffin, Melissa Kaye Russell, Jason Neil Anderson, Tina Marie Sherels, and Levi Moses Biddle; great grandchildren Lucas Allen Chaffin, Garrett Michael Russell, Dominic Mikkel Anderson, Brandon Tyrell Anderson, Mariah Nicole Miles; and her great great grandson Eli’Jay Alan Miles.
Sue was preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Neacy Johnson, her siblings Delcie Florence, Jackie Eagle, Vada Mae (Cebert Paul) Walden, and her son Tony Reed Hammer.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 20, 2021, from 11am-1pm at Flanner Buchanan – Memorial Park, 9350 East Washington Street, Indianapolis, Indiana 46229 with a funeral service immediately following. Sue will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband, Floyd in Memorial Park Cemetery. In honor of Sue, family and friends are encouraged to wear the color red and their favorite hat to the services.
