Lawrence A. Ferger

May 3, 1934 — February 21, 2021

Zionsville, Indiana

A letter from his girls,
Dad will be remembered as a man of many skills and talents, his devotion to his family, and
his gentle dry sense of humor.
His abilities to work with his hands in his workshop and around his home and the homes of
family, will always be remembered with gratitude and fond memories. Whether it was
assisting and teaching Jane how to brick an extra large patio – and bringing over extra bricksor extending and resurfacing a patio with leftover blue slate for Kirsten, to constantly moving
bushes in the landscaping for better placement, to splitting and replanting 100’s of Hosta’s
(to the delight of the local deer population), to building arbors and showers and anything
Loni desired at the farm in Iowa, Dad was always ready to bring his tools, his work ethic and
know how, and complete the project. Dad was DIY-ing it before there were TV shows!
He loved his family with a quiet ferocity and spent time in Florida with his sister and family,
traveling to the Iowa farm for all the special occasions and family gatherings, and in the last
few years, each week we were able to share meals and time with him to hear stories of his
youth in a time so different from today:
One of our favorites, is the story of how his mother, Helen, was so perplexed why Larry
returned home after days out with friends during the winter months in Iowa without
his mittens: pair after pair. We were told that as kids they would grab on to car
bumpers and slide on their boots and then to “hop off your ride” you had to leave your
mittens frozen to the back bumper. We smile as we think of all the mittens left behind
on car bumpers in Des Moines during those days.
Many will remember his nickname of “Lucky Larry” and it seemed from early on, dad had a
little extra luck with everything… which really translated to his practicality, his quiet way of
thinking about something and planning, without anyone knowing, so he was always ready with
a solution to a wide range of situations and ready for a variety of opportunities. In reality, we
were the lucky ones to have had him as a father; to have his guidance, support, and
generosity always …
And although we understand dad and mom are now together for eternity, his absence will
leave a big hole in our hearts and in the lives of those who were lucky enough to know him.
The world seems a little less kind without him.
With deepest gratitude and love for our father,
Kirsten and Jane
