Larry J Downey, 75, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away on July 3, 2017. He was born on August 6, 1941 in Vincennes, Indiana to Louis Downey and Anna Lucille (Sparrow) Lane. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Linda Downey; Also his daughters Lisa Potter (Jack), Amy Flood (Steve); sibling Michael Downey (Karen); step-daughters Kari Haines, Debbie Mitchell (Doug); step-son Tim Petty (Terrie); many nieces and nephews; 14 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Robert “Irish” Downey (Nancy), sister Kathleen “Kappy” Downey, step-son Tom Petty and grandson Bryce Mitchell.
Larry grew up in Indianapolis and graduated from Scecina Memorial High School in 1959. He met his wife Linda, in 1982 and they married in July 1985. He was a printer with the Indpls Star News and retired after 38 years of service.
He enjoyed all sports and could be called upon to quote game stats from years past. That strong interest led him to referee various baseball and softball games, something he truly took pride in. Without a doubt, his beloved favorite team was the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. He set his watch by their game time and helped “coach” them to many victories. He had many additional passions throughout his life including golf, league bowling, the North Central Panthers’ basketball, the Indianapolis Colts, and most of all his family.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 12, 2017, from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at Flanner and Buchanan – Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, 9700 Allisonville Rd, Indianapolis, IN 46250. The Celebration of Life Service will begin at 3:00 p.m. with Father Tom Widner officiating. Graveside service to follow.
