Kenneth L. Gray, M.D. 84, of Speedway, Indiana, died on November 16, 2018.
He was born in Sandborn, Indiana, February 14, 1934 to Roy A. Gray and Cora May Stephens Gray. He graduated from Arsenal Technical High school in 1953 and attended Butler University where he received a B.A. in Zoology in 1956. He graduated from the I.U. School of Medicine in 1959. Following internship and residency training in Family Practice and Internal Medicine at Methodist Hospital, he certified with the American Board of Family Practice and opened a private practice in 1961 in Speedway, Indiana until his retirement in 1999. He returned to Methodist Hospital as Director of Family Practice Education from 1977-1978, before returning to his private practice in Speedway. During his medical career, he made an impact on numerous medical interns and residents by hosting and mentoring them in his medical practice.
A member of the Indiana National Guard, Kenneth retired with the rank of Major in 1969. He was a member of the Indianapolis Medical Society, the Indiana State Medical Association, and the American Academy of General Practice, a Fellow and Life Member of the American Academy of Family Physicians. In September 2000, he received special recognition from the American Board of Family Practice for his outstanding commitment to excellence in the specialty of Family Practice.
In 1958, he married his wife, Jaclyn A. Hite, in a ceremony performed by his father, a Disciples of Christ Minister. During his tenure as a physician in Speedway, Indiana, he and his wife Jaclyn petitioned the Town Board to consider adding fluoride to the town water supply. Upon the approval of the Town Board, Speedway began adding fluoride to the water in 1961. He also served as the physician for the Speedway High School sports program and participated in the Speedway Marching Band summer camp. He was a charter member of Westview Christian Church where he held many roles, including active participation in the LOGOS youth program. Additionally, he served as a tutor for the READ UP Program at IPS School 107. He was the Medical Advisor for the Pension Fund of the Christian Church, Disciples of Christ from 1971-2007.
Throughout his life, he was active in several music programs, most recently with the Zionsville Concert Band, and included the Butler Marching Band, Butler Alumni Band, the Indianapolis Municipal Band, and church music ensembles. He played several instruments including the clarinet and several types of saxophones. He passed his love of music to his children and grandchildren, all of which have participated in marching and concert bands. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jaclyn Ann Hite Gray; two children, Dr. Lindi S. Holt and Mark A. Gray (Suzann); and five grandchildren, Jennifer E. Keith (Levi); Rachael M. Harvey (Kyle); and Anthony M. L., Kayla M. and Alyssa E. Gray.
Calling is Tuesday, November 20, 2018 from 3-7pm at Flanner Buchanan-Speedway. The Funeral Service is on Wednesday, November 21, 2018 at 1:00 pm at Westview Christian Church, 5925 West 34th Street in
Indianapolis with calling from Noon to service time. Interment will be at Richland Cemetery in Rush County, Indiana.
