Kayla Michelle Heilers

Kayla Michelle Heilers, 39, of Carmel, Indiana, passed away on April 12, 2025. She was born on June 30, 1985, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Michael and Karla Woodward.

Kayla was a grant coordinator with the Indiana University School of Medicine Neuroscience Department. She held a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Indiana University and a Master of Public Affairs degree concentrating in Nonprofit Management from IUPUI.

Kayla always put others first, especially her children, who she was so proud of. She was so grateful and gracious. She led an energetic lifestyle filled with a range of interests but always centered around sports and being active. She played every sport she could during her high school years, later playing adult kickball where she met her husband. She was a dedicated IU Basketball fan where she also attended college.

Kayla was known for her humor, often lightening the room with her jokes and easy-going demeanor.

Kayla’s love for reading and travel reflected her adventurous spirit. Whether surrounded by her family or exploring new places, her laughter and warmth touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.

Kayla is survived by her husband, Shawn; children, Benjamin and Lucy; parents, Michael and Karla; sister and brother-in-law, Ashley and Matt; nephew and niece, Will and Kamryn; grandmother, Judy Lathrum; as well as her parents-in-law; Jim and Irene; six in-laws; and eleven nieces and nephews.

There will be a Visitation on Wednesday, April 16, from 4pm to 7pm, at Flanner Buchanan – Broad Ripple, 1305 Broad Ripple Avenue. A Prayer Service will be held on Thursday, April 17, at 10am, at Christ the King Church, 5884 Crittenden Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46220.
