Kay Shertzer, 72, Indianapolis, passed away May 6, 2017. Shewas born on November 9, 1944 in Indianapolis, the daughter of Wilford and Zola(Yaw) Poland. After raising her family, Kay returned to school to become aregistered nurse. She had a long nursing career with both Wishard MemorialHospital and the Roudebush VA Hospital. Kay was the head nurse on the heartteam at the VA Hospital in Indianapolis, and was the first nurse to assist in aheart transplant at the hospital, which at the time took 17-18 hours. Duringher nursing career, she was published in the American Medical Journal and alsoauthored medical pamphlets. Kay was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church.She loved to ski, knit, read, and exercise. Kay was preceded in death by herdaughter, Debra Carr, and her parents. She is survived by her children, LorneShertzer, Laura Shertzer, and Tamara Metheny; her grandchildren, JustinSanders, Brandon Thompson, and Tylor Blake, as well as two additional grandchildren;her two great-grandchildren, as well as one to be expected; her brother, MarcPoland (Leeann); and her former husband, David Shertzer. Services will be onFriday, May 12, 2017 at 3 PM at Flanner and Buchanan- Washington Park North,2706 Kessler Blvd. W. Drive, with visitation from 1 PM until service time.Memorial gifts may be made to the American Heart Association. Condolences maybe shared online at www.flannerbuchanan.com.
