Kay Carol Hurley, 81 of Indianapolis, Indiana passed away on the afternoon of Thursday, October 17, 2024, at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Kay was born on April 7, 1943, in Frankfort, Indiana, a daughter of Charles Kenneth “Kenny” and Lota (Pruett) Alexander. She is preceded in death by her parents.
Kay was the youngest of Kenny and Lota’s four children. She is preceded in death by all her siblings: Beatrice, Mary, and Larry (who passed away in infancy).
Kay met James A. Hurley Jr. in 1958. They dated for eight years and were married on June 18, 1966, in Indianapolis. She is survived by her loving husband James, to whom she was happily married for 58 years.
Together James and Kay have two children who also survive: son James A. Hurley III of Indianapolis, Indiana and daughter Pamela K. Hurley of Indianapolis, Indiana.
Kay was born in Frankfort but moved to Indianapolis shortly after birth. She grew up in Indianapolis and was a lifelong resident of the east side. Kay attended Howe High School, graduating in the class of 1960. Kay’s priority was her family and the raising of her two children. She was a devoted mother and homemaker and was always involved in James and Pamela’s school events and extracurricular activities. Kay was a woman who loved life, loved people, and was always full of positive energy. Throughout the years, Kay enjoyed traveling. Most trips involved traveling to Florida but even included destinations as far away as Aruba, Hawaii, Bangkok, Hong Kong, London, and Paris. Once James and Pamela were away at college, Kay and her husband James started going on cruises, visiting ports as close as the Caribbean but as far away as Alaska and Europe as well as a passage through the Panama Canal.
Kay converted to Catholicism late in life but once she did, fell in love with the faith and became an active parishioner at Our Lady of Lourdes. Her love of the church and her concern for the people around her compelled Kay to become actively involved in the St. Vincent de Paul organization, where she helped to provide food and supplies to those in need.
Throughout her professional career, Kay worked in various secretarial positions. Most of her career was spent working for Frank E. Irish, Inc., a mechanical contracting company focused on the installation of heating and cooling systems for schools, hospitals, and various commercial / industrial buildings. Her position involved working both on the construction site as well as in the office. At times, her job even allowed Kay to work side by side with her husband James.
