KATHARINE “KAY” L. WELLS
May 17, 1922 – November 29, 2016
Katharine “Kay” L. Wells, 94, of Indianapolis, passed away on November 29, 2016, after a lengthy illness. She was preceded in death by her parents, Grover and Geneva Martin of Lexington, IN; her husband, Jack C. Wells of Indianapolis; her brother, Lee Martin of Scottsburg, IN; her son, Kermit Wells of Denver CO; and a grandson, Carl Allen Yorger of Indianapolis. She is survived by her children Joyce Yorger of Indianapolis; Melanie Wells of Indianapolis; Gordon (Nancy) Wells of Mansfield, OH; and Bonnie Nash of Indianapolis who is a very special friend considered to be a family member. She was blessed to have many other devoted friends whom she considered to be extended family who also addressed her as “Mom” or “Grandma.” Also among her survivors are three grandchildren, Dawn (Samuel) Moore of Plainfield, IN; Dana (Larry) Blakely of Matthews, IN; and Laura Yorger of Indianapolis. Kay’s quiver is full of numerous great and great-great grandchildren, including Braden Polk; Tina (Phil) Koban; Daisy Koban; Thor Koban; Lilly Koban; Charles Becker, Jr.; Evan Becker; Sydney Becker; Alan Moore; Ashley Moore; Tre’ Darby; Ariel Blakely; Benjamin Blakely; Magdelin Blakely; Lydia Blakely; Samuel Blakely; Isabel Blakely; Dove Blakely; Olive Blakely; Scarlet Blakely; and Chloe Blakely.
Kay majored in home economics at Indiana Central College in Indianapolis but suspended her education shortly before graduation to marry Jack, the love of her life. Jack and Kay were hand-holding “lovebirds” all of their lives and were often asked to share the secret to their successful marriage with others. The answer was simple: they loved the Lord Jesus Christ as their personal Savior, so their marriage was a reflection of God’s perfect love for the church (His Bride). Jack and Kay loved to travel and visited 48 U.S. state capitals and all of the Canadian provincial capitals.
Kay loved children and taught Sunday school (4 and 5 year olds) for many years. She was very creative both in storytelling and in the crafts she had the children make. Even in later years when she no longer was teaching, teenagers and young adults would come up to her and express gratitude for the influence that she had on their lives.
Kay was also an avid reader. Euginia Price was one of her favorite authors. Her very favorite author, however, was Jesus, as she began the practice of reading through the entire Bible every year beginning in 1971. She made a note in her Bible every time she finished reading it, so from September 29, 1971 to November 15, 2008, there were 50 entries recorded. Unfortunately, in recent years macular degeneration robbed her of the ability to read any longer which was a great disappointment to her.
A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, December 5, 2016, at the Flanner and Buchanan Washington Park East Funeral Home (10722 E. Washington St., Indianapolis, 46229, 317-899-7115) with Brother John Ray of Southeast Baptist Tabernacle officiating. Friends may visit from 12:00 – 2:00 pm at the funeral home. Interment will be at the Washington Park East Cemetery immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family is encouraging friends to consider a memorial gift to Hindustan Bible Institute (HBI) Global Partners (www.hbiglobalpartners.org), Wycliffe Bible Translators (www.wycliffe.org), or a charity of their choice. Kay supported orphaned children in India for many years by partnering with HBI Global Partners.
