Kalman Paul King was born in Arad Romania in October of 1939. He was born to Paul and Juliana Kosztelnyik. He came to the United States as a small child and lived in the 1200 block of King Avenue in Haughville. In September 1952, his parents and uncle formally changed their last name to King. No coincidence they lived on King Avenue. The first English phrase he learned was from other kids in the neighborhood. It was the phrase “on your mark, get set, go!”. His love of sports continued from that point to the very end. He graduated from Washington High School in 1958. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. and served for four years active duty and two years reserve, from 1958 until 1964. He had the honor of being stationed in San Diego the entire time while serving. He was discharged with the rank of Corporal, E4. Following his service, he worked at Allison’s Transmission as well as various car dealerships throughout the city. He married and had three children, Allan, Robin, and Charles.
Kalman had a never-ending love for his country and his family. He enjoyed nature, gardening, and movies. He always had a dream of living in a log cabin, in the woods. He was always a gentleman, and tried to be polite to everyone he interacted with. He was a good-hearted man that loved to joke and laugh. He would like to be remembered for the many positive things and joy he shared throughout his life.
He was with his love of 16 years, Gyneth Hedrick, until his passing. He is survived by his two sisters MaryAnn King and Margaret Roberts, their two children, his three children, and seven grandchildren.
