Judith Ann (Judy) Doan, 81, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away on Thursday, September 5, 2024. Judy was born in Indianapolis on December 11, 1942, to Edward and Mildred Hayden (Judd). She attended Ben Davis High School, and was a lifelong member of Fleming Garden Christian Church. Judy was married to her first husband, William “Bill” Harris and had three children. She worked for many years at Allisons Transmission/Rolls Royce as a secretary, where she met her second husband, Ray Doan.
Judy and Ray enjoyed traveling together, and spending time with friends and family. She enjoyed her role as a mother, a step-mother and especially, a grandmother. When her children were young, Judy stayed busy volunteering with their schools PTO, Vacation Bible School and church youth groups. She also enjoyed planning activities, card parties and other events for friends and acquaintances. She volunteered with the Womens Fellowship Group at Fleming Garden Christian Church to sew patriotic pillows for veterans, along with many other projects.
Judy loved watching and feeding the birds. She was especially fond of hummingbirds and once traveled to Port Aransas, Texas, to follow their migration path. She was also very fond of cardinals, who held special significance because her father often fed them from his hand.
Judy was also an avid cat lover. Late in life, she adopted an adult cat, Hadley, who became the center of her life and her greatest companion as she faced the many transitions associated with her dementia/Alzheimer’s journey.
She is survived by her sister, Carolyn Sue “Sue” and her three children: William Richard “Rick” Harris (Rhonda) and his daughter, Amber; LeeAnn Harris (Michelle Johnson) and their daughter, Olivia, and James “Jim” Harris (Brenda).
Services will be held at Flanner & Buchanan-Speedway, at 2950 North High School Road, on Friday, September 13, from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m., with services at 6:30 p.m. The family is requesting donations be made to Misty Eyes Animal Center in Judy’s memory in lieu of flowers.
