Joyce Jungemann

Joyce Jungemann, an educator, traveler, musician, mother, grandmother and life partner to Luther Jungemann, passed away in Carmel, Indiana on August 9, 2024. 

Joyce is self-described as having values of dignity, cheerfulness, hard work, family and church, along with dedication to duty coupled with Christian charity - in part the influence of her parents. Beyond the family influence, she developed a love of music and literature. Attending the Methodist church was an important part of her family's lives. Visiting family was important although relatives lived in distant locations. 

Joyce was born in McConnelsville, Ohio in 1933 and later lived in Malta and Pennsville, small, southeastern Ohio communities. She attended several different schools following graduation from Parker High School in 1951. Joyce was noted as having the best smile, being the most friendly, and most popular at her school during her time there. In addition, she served as president of her class for two years and was the first female president in the history of the Dayton school system. Later, Joyce attended college at the University of Cincinnati School of Nursing 

Joyce had a job at Delco Products, where she met Luther, who was beginning his career as a newly graduated engineer. In 1952 Joyce and Luther were married in Dayton Ohio. They lived in Kansas City, and Evansville (twice), as well as Washington, D.C, Annandale, and Arlington; eventually retiring in Osprey Florida. They subsequently lived in Tucson, Arizona with Joyce finally moving to Carmel, Indiana to be near family following Luther’s death. 

Between the years 1953 and 1958, Joyce and Luther’s family of 5 children were born. In 1964 Joyce enrolled in classes at the University of Evansville and eventually graduated with a BA in English, a MA in English, and a MA in Humanities. Later, while teaching in Indiana and in Florida, she obtained professional endorsements from St. Leo College, Jacksonville University, University of Washington, and Carnegie Mellon University., 

Joyce gained a lifetime love of opera, the ballet, and the symphony. She and Luther became deacons in their Sarasota Lutheran Church. Joyce’s love of music and as an enduring life learner. She learned to play the harp when in her 80’s and 90’s. 

Joyce was preceded by her husband Luther, and survived by four of her five children, having lost a daughter in 2019. Also surviving are 17 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She was also preceded by her brother Roger Wilson and survived by her brother Ron Wilson. In the final fulfilment of her life’s journey, Joyce and Luther will be interred in Sarasota, Florida.
