Joyce Joan (Woods) Poindexter

Joyce Joan (Woods) Poindexter was born April 27, 1936, to William and Orena Woods. Joyce departed her life on November 8, 2022, at the age of 86.
Joyce attended Jackson Center School in Arcadia, Indiana. The family moved to Indianapolis in 1947. Joyce attended St. Bridget Catholic School from 1947-1950, she then attended Shortridge High School and graduated in 1954.
Joyce accepted Jesus Christ at a young age. She attended Our Saviour Lutheran Church. She worked as a Sunday School Teacher, on the Youth Board, Stewardship, and Education Board. She was an Advisor for the traveling Youth Choir along with using her beautiful alto voice. She also worked on the Altar Guild. Joyce served as the President of the Congregation at Our Saviour Lutheran Church for one and half years.
Joyce was a faithful member and helped start Timothy Lutheran Church from 1985-2005. She worked on the Altar Guild, Stewardship, and was the Finance Treasurer. She also started a food pantry to help those in need. She helped with Vacation Bible School as a teacher. She also helped put up walls with the Labors of Christ. That was a rewarding project.
Joyce later joined New Unity Church. God allowed her to work in the Altar Ministry, Hospitality, and Mother’s Ministry. Joyce was caring, loving, and an encourager to all those who needed uplifting.
Joyce married William M. Poindexter, Jr. on January 25, 1961. From that union there were three children, Elaine M., William A., and Le’Nita A. Poindexter.
Joyce loved community service. She was a Girl Scout Troop Leader of 25 young girls, her sister Phyllis Girton worked along side her.
Joyce worked for the Federal Government for Fort Benjamin Harrison from August 1955 to July 1973. She then took a position at Internal Revenue from August 1973 to September 1993. While working for the I.R.S., she became an instructor which allowed Joyce to teach new employees, allowing her to travel to Ohio, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and California. She retired from federal service with 38 years of experience.
Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, William Poindexter; sisters, Georgia Anderson, Janet Burnett, and Margo Woods; brothers, William Woods, Jr., and Vernon Woods.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her children, Elaine Poindexter, William (Tony) Poindexter, and Le’Nita Poindexter Hampton (Patrick); grandchildren, Lorraine, Che’Laina, and Jamal; sisters, Phyllis and Patricia; brothers Stephen and Michael; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation for Joyce will be held at New Unity Church, 2761 North Sherman Drive, Indianapolis, IN. 46218 on Saturday, November 19, 2022, from 10am to Noon with Funeral Services to immediately follow at Noon.
