October 19, 1924 — March 2, 2024

Zionsville

Zionsville, Indiana – Joseph Harold Steimel, 99 years young, passed away on March 2, 2024, while comforted by his beloved family.

Joe was born on October 19, 1924, in Vincennes, Indiana, to parents John and Flossie (Butler) Steimel. In 1937, Joe and the family moved to a farm outside of Wheatland, Indiana. He graduated from Wheatland High School in 1943 and was drafted into the Army the following year.

While in the Army, Joe fought on Omaha Beach, in Normandy, and in Belgium. He was awarded The French Legion of Honor medal for his role in the liberation of France, as well as a Purple Heart for injuries sustained in the final months of the war. He was discharged in November 1945 and re-enlisted the next day, completing another tour in 1947.  He went on to join the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Joe married Selma Williams in 1946 and they remained together until her passing in 1979. Together they raised four children. He remarried in 1982 to Judy Eggerding and grew his family by two more children.

Joe never knew a stranger nor held a grudge. His sense of humor uplifted all those around him but most of all, he loved his family. He trusted in God and his plan to get him through the hard times and his faith was rewarded by the people he loved throughout his life.

In addition to his parents, brothers and wife Selma, Joe is preceded in death by his wife Judy, son Wayne Steimel, grandson Brad Steimel, and great-great-granddaughter Merrick.

He is survived by his children Steve (Annette), (Brenda), Sally (Neil), Sandy, Tim (Sarah) and Jill (Jeff),  13 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Friday, June 14, 2024, at Flanner Buchanan – Memorial Park, from 12 pm – 2 pm. A memorial service will be held following visitation at 2 pm with Pastor Beau Underwood officiating.
