Joseph R. Hastings

Joseph R. Hastings, born on January 23, 1951, in Indianapolis, Indiana, peacefully transitioned to be with the Lord on June 2, 2023.

Joe was the cherished third child of Daniel and Rosia Hastings, who preceded him in death.

Joe graduated from Shortridge HS in Indianapolis in 1969. He met Cordell, the love of his life in 1972. Married in 1974, he was a loving devoted husband of 49 years. They were blessed with three beautiful children. As a devoted father, Joe was a Scout Master, baseball, and basketball coach. He attended almost every game/event that his children participated in.

Joe was a great cook and grill-master. He loved to see people eat and enjoy his food. He was a well-respected neighbor, who was always willing to help.

Joe began his career at Blue Cross/Blue Shield. Afterward, he secured employment at General Motors. As a man known for his brilliance working with numbers, Joe spent most of his career, that spanned 30+ years, working in the Payroll Department. After retiring, he was asked to return to work for General Motors as a Consultant for 2 more yrs.

Joe will be remembered for his profound love for his family. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Cordell Hastings, his sons Joseph R. Hastings II (Ashanttii), Tyrus J. Hastings (Kari), and daughter, Alicia M. Merkel (Nicholas); his seven grandchildren, Cory Fairer, Caleb Fairer, Karis Hastings, Danielle Hastings; Olivia Merkel, Ava Merkel, Emma Merkel; five siblings, Malinda Jackson (Rev. Charles Jackson), Rosia Fields (Charlie), Darla Stevens, Ronald Hastings (Cheryl), Gina Neely (Timothy); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and relatives. Joe was preceded in death by his sister, Patty Ann Hastings.
