Joseph Glen McAtee, 89, of Indianapolis, Indiana passed away on December 16, 2022. He was
born on September 21, 1933, in Loogootee, Indiana, to James and Myrtle McAtee.
He was a proud graduate of Loogootee High School though he left Loogootee it never left his
heart. He spent a lifetime in service to his community and our nation. He served in the United
States Army from 1954 until 1956. Upon his return from active Army service, he began 63 years
of service in Law Enforcement. In 1958 he joined the Indianapolis Police Department. He served
as the Indianapolis Police Chief from 1981until 1986. He was elected Sheriff of Marion County
in 1987 and served in the role until 1994. He then served as Pike Township Constable from 1995
until 2002. He served as a Reserve Deputy Sheriff from 2002 until 2021. He was also a Colonel
in the Indiana National Guard until 2006. His passion was serving and protecting the community.
He is survived by his two sons; Bart (Denise) McAtee, Bret (Nikki) McAtee; his four
grandchildren; Megan (David) Waterman, Katharine (Adam) Gaff, Jacob (Mary Jane) McAtee,
Matthew (Mercedie) McAtee; and his seven great-grandchildren; Lucas Waterman, Landon
Waterman, Sophia Waterman, Logan Waterman, Lachlan Waterman, Maverick McAtee, and
Sawyer McAtee.
Funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, December 22, 2022, at Flanner Buchanan –
Community Life Center at Washington Park East Cemetery, 10612 East Washington Street, Indianapolis, Indiana, 46229 with entombment in Washington Park East Cemetery to follow. Visitation will take place Wednesday, December 21, 2022 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Memorial contributions in his name may be made to The Hundred Club, 9000 Keystone
Crossing, Suite 660, Indianapolis, Indiana 46240. The Hundred Club is a charitable organization
who supports the families of first responders who have fallen in the line of duty.
