Jonetta C. Holland

April 14, 1948 — September 8, 2019

Indianapolis, Indiana

Jonetta C. Holland began her journey of life on April 14, 1948. She transitioned to her eternal home during the morning of September 8, 2019 to be with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was preceded into eternity by her loving father and mother, Elder Joseph Edward Holland and Letha Bunton Holland. Brothers, Clarence and Andrew Holland.

Jonetta accepted Christ as a child and became a lifelong member of First Church, Church of Christ (Holiness) U.S.A. She left a legacy there as a faithful, loving and devoted willing worker for the cause of Christ and His people. Her service included: Church Clerk, Choir member, and the United Christian Womens’ Ministries. Her beautiful singing voice was a blessing to all who heard her. She was a team player as well as a strong leader. She inspired many over the years as the director and co-director of First Church’s and the UCWM play productions and supported Youth events and outings. Jonetta was a woman of integrity; always true to her word and willing to lend a helping hand to enrich the lives of others. Jonetta loved God. She lived and expressed her love for Him through devoted service for many years.

Jonetta was a graduate of Shortridge High School, class of 1966. She participated in many of the choir and chorale groups. She acquired outstanding communication skills, both verbal and written. She was an excellent proofreader and grammarian. Her artistic skill was reflected in her beautiful poetry. Her expertise defined her work at the Indiana Department of Education, Black Expo, Steward Speaker Series and in her dream job as receptionist with Lily Endowment, Inc. She served for over 20 years retiring December 2014.

“ A friend loveth at all times.” (Prov.17:17) Jonetta was affectionately known to her friends as, “Jodie.” Jodie’s friendships were paramount in her life. She took special efforts to cultivate and nurture her relationships. She was authentic and extremely loyal. As she reached out her hand to help, she instinctively touched your heart. Jodie valued her many friendships to the point that she was willing to share them. Over the years, she would bring together her close friends from the various domains of her life: work, church, childhood and family. Eventually, her friends developed cherished friendships among themselves. That is how Jodie loved; purposely sharing and connecting in a beautiful and authentic way that touched many lives.

Jonetta loved to travel which included several cruises. She loved road trips; traveling extensively over the United States by car. She attended almost every COCHUSA National convention since childhood. Jodie was also a gracious hostess. She loved to cook and entertain her friends and family in her home for the Holidays or any occasion. Jodie also loved to shop; especially at thrift stores. Finding a great bargain always put that wonderful smile on her face.

Jonetta fought the good fight of Faith. She will always be loved and cherished by her brother, Lawrence. They share a very special bond. Along with her brother, Lawrence, she leaves to cherish her memory: her sister, Ruth Holland of Los Angeles, godson, Lee Rayburn Martin of Chicago and a host of cousins, aunts and special friends.

“In the end, we won’t remember the words of our adversaries, only the silence of our Friends.” (MLK)

Now, Jonetta’s life’s work speaks for her.
