Johng Gook "John" Yahng

August 7, 1937 — September 16, 2024

Indianapolis, Indiana

Johng Gook "John" Yahng passed away on Monday, September 16, 2024 at the age of 87.  He was a wonderful father and grandfather who was very loved and will be missed.

John was born in Chilsan, South Korea on August 7, 1937. In 1967, he left Korea to move to America with his wife and 1 year old son to pursue a new adventure. John brought his Christian values and together with 5 other Korean families, in 1971, founded a Korean church in Indianapolis, IN. He also originated the Korean Society of Indianapolis, as well as a Korean language school to promote Korean culture and teach the next generation. John worked at Methodist Hospital in the Hematology department for over 35 years and developed good friendships for years to come.

John was a determined, dedicated and loving father, who had many interests. He enjoyed ballroom dancing with his wife and offered his time to entertain residents at local healthcare facilities. Singing, gardening, tennis, and golf were also many of his favorite pastimes. Traveling the world was one of John's lifelong dreams that he was able to fulfill. His children and grandchildren were his pride and joy. He will be remembered by the name his oldest grandson first called him, “Haji”, a toddlerized version of Hal-Abeoji.

John was married to his late wife, Sung Sook "Susie", for 58 years. He is survived by his son, Charles (Amanda), and his two daughters Caroline (Joseph Pieters) and Catharine; grandchildren Evan, Claudia, Serena, and Noah.

A private service is being planned.  Memorial contributions may be directed to Second Presbyterian Church, 7700 North Meridian Street, Indianapolis, IN 46260.
