John Thomas Hempfling, Jr.

John Thomas Hempfling, Jr., 85, of Carmel, passed away on Wednesday, November 20, 2019.

He was born on September 9, 1934 in Indianapolis to the late John Thomas Hempfling, Sr. and Edith Mae (Pearson) Hempfling. John was a 1952 graduate of Arsenal Tech High School and enlisted in the U.S. Marines, serving from 1954-1956. He worked as an electrical engineer for Chrysler, retiring in 1988. John earned his pilot’s license and enjoyed flying. He also enjoyed being outdoors and hanging out with the guys at the lake. John loved to go scuba diving in tropical locations with his wife, Carolyn. John enjoyed attending the Indianapolis 500 races, working on computers, reading and operating his Ham radio. Later in life he had fulfilment in eating out with friends and enjoyed time spent with his family.

John is survived by his children, Kathy (Tim) Thacker, Scott Kenning, Marsha Kadner, Jody (Jim) Heck; grandchildren, Bob Thacker, April VanDerMerwe, Andrew Kenning, Joelynn Heck, Jimmy Heck, Jayden Heck, Kelsie Kadner; great-grandchildren, Abbie Thacker, Stella Thacker, Emma VanDerMerwe. John is also survived by his sister, Jo Ann (John) Sparling; and longtime companion, Donna Paul. He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife, Carolyn Sue (Herman) Hempfling.

Visitation will be held on Monday, November 25, 2019 from 12-2pm at Flanner Buchanan – Washington Park East with funeral services beginning at 2pm. Entombment will follow in Washington Park East Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Susan G. Komen Foundation or the National Kidney Foundation.
