Born and raised in Indianapolis a family of Four boys and as the baby of the family.
He started his career in the Army in Germany and in the police for 40 years: 20 years in IMPD and 20 years in IPS; a family tradition of serving his country; his grandfather, father and brother were all in the Police force; serving this great country. America!
In those 40 years, he became a Captain. He made so much impact on the lives of people he worked with and the Community he served. He loved his work early rising up in the morning at 4 am. First with a Donut, chocolate, ice cream , and coffee; he loved his “Sweets ” and no matter what he found his way to get more sweets during the day. His locker was full of all kinds of Chocolate and sweets! That was Stiggy!
He never left anyone hungry. With his love to share and give. He was a generous giver of his time and he built lifelong friends. He carried a personality of crazy jokes and outlandish stories which brought smiles to those around him. He even used these traits to help him overcome his pain he experienced late in life. Nothing could keep John down.
He was a loving husband, a father, grandfather, great grandfather,brother, uncle and mentor. He was known as brother John in his Dominion prayer group. He was a fun patient with his doctors and nurses, he kept his appointments like gold!
In addition to the these qualities, John was a loving Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather, Uncle, and Brother. Survivors include his wife Augustina Stiegelmeyer, Sons; Scott (Lauren) Stiegelmeyer, Michael Omo, Daughters, Tiffany (Randy) Wash, Suzette (Marty) Mascher,Trisha Stiegelmeyer, Christina (Stephen) Morris, Becky (Ian) Nord; Grandkids Miles, Braiden, Mason, Piper, Brittany, Taylore, Austin; Great Grandchildren Emmy and Scarlett; Brother, Edward (Judy) Stiegelmeyer; many in-laws, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Preceding John in death were Mother, Leona Stiegelmeyer; Father Robert Stiegelmeyer; Brother; William (Bill) Stiegelmeyer and Robert Stiegelmeyer.
Above all, he got his last bucket wish of traveling, but one week shy away from going to Europe. He was happier.
He will have a private last goodbye ceremony , With few close family before his Cremation .
A police escort will follow immediately to Forest Lawn to be laid to rest with his mother and father at the ” Mausoleum”
A celebration of his life and a picture talk with his friends and family will be in December 11th at the Indiana War Memorial from 2 pm to 5 pm.
