John R. Claycombe
Age 95 , of Indianapolis, IN passed away Monday, February 15,2021 due to COVID 19. Private family services are planned and there will be no calling. John was an attorney at law and former general counsel of Indiana Blue Cross and Blue Shield. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, an Eagle Scout and Firecrafter. After graduating from Shortridge High School, John attended the Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania and graduated from DePauw University and the Indiana University School of Law. On June 12, 1948 he married Jean L Maglott, whom he loved and cherished for 57 years. Their marriage was blessed with their beloved sons, Steven L and Richard J Claycombe and daughters Judith C Mathis and Janet C Karsas.
John was a member of the Indianapolis and Indiana State Bar Associations, Crooked Stick Golf Club, Western Seniors’ Golf Association and Lawyers Club. He served as a board member and attorney for the Indiana Blood Center, the Indianapolis Bar Association Board of Managers and the Indianapolis Day Nursery. John served as the president of the Lawyers Club, the Western Seniors’ Golf Association and Beta Theta Pi Fraternity at DePauw University. In 1994 he was named a Sagamore of the Wabash. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
His second marriage to Elizabeth G Parrish began on December 30, 2007. John and Libby spent the following years happily reshaping each others’ lives. He is survived by his son Richard and daughters Judy and Janet, four grandchildren and five great grandchildren and four great great grand children. He was predeceased by Jean, Libby, his parents, brother Robert A. Claycombe, sister Mary Alice Adney and son Steven. Memorial contributions may be made to the Indiana Blood Center or the donor’s favorite charity. Flanner & Buchanan, Mortuaries/Crematories, are handling arrangements.
