John Manifold Wallace, MD, 68, of Carmel, Indiana passed away peacefully on July 16, 2020. He was born April 22, 1952 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Education: John graduated from North Central High School in 1970 and attended Indiana University for undergraduate studies before graduating from Indiana University Medical School in 1978. As a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity at IU, he formed many lifelong friendships and was affectionately known as “Fold.” In medical school, he was the president of his class three of his four years.
Family: In 1977, John married Therese (Lyons) Wallace in Indianapolis at St. Pius X. Together they had four children – John Andrew (wife: Lisa Wallace), Emily Marie (husband: Jonathan Palmer), Joseph St. John, and Susan Therese, and four grandchildren – Lucy Anne, John Manifold, Whitney Susan, and Anna Kate.
Childhood: As a young boy, he had many fond memories growing up at Lake Wawasee. Beginning with his time at Camp Voyager, he developed a lifelong appreciation of the outdoors. Similarly, John fell in love with Disney World during a family vacation the first year it opened. Later in life it became one of his greatest joys to take his family to Lake Wawasee and on trips to various national parks as well as Disney World.
Career: John served as a Family Physician in Fort Wayne for 37 years. He began his own family medicine practice and later joined First Care Family Physicians where he worked with his dear friend and nurse Monica Howell for 28 years. He was also Medical Director of the Transitional Unit at Parkview Health for many years. By the time he chose to retire, he was proudest of the calm, patient, and compassionate bedside manner he developed over three decades of practice.
Personal: Outside of his medical practice, he enjoyed an active lifestyle doing triathlons, playing racket sports (racquetball, tennis, pickleball), and swimming – including swimming across Lake Wawasee twice. He loved the outdoors and sought opportunities to hike, bike, kayak, and canoe whenever he could. Later in life, Hilton Head Island became a memorable place for John and his family to vacation.
John also found great joy in his music (especially Name That Tune), trivia, and Scrabble. His great skills were admired by his family who always tried to outwit him, unsuccessfully. He was like a J8-U1-K5-E1-B3-O1-X8 of the greatest hits and shared knowledge and stories that his family enjoyed listening to.
After John and Terry relocated to Carmel, Indiana to be closer to family, he was introduced to pickleball. With his sister Lu as his partner, he won the gold medal in his first pickleball tournament. This encouraged his love of the game of pickleball. In retirement, he worked at the Monon Community Center where he was a pickleball instructor and Member Services Associate. He remains forever grateful for the wonderful friendships he formed with his co-workers and pickleball friends at the Monon Community Center.
Legacy: As a doctor, he will be remembered for his unwavering belief in treating the patient and not just the symptoms. As a friend, he will be remembered for his kind and gentle demeanor as well as his great sense of humor. As a sibling, he will be remembered as “Johnny,” “Big Brub Chub” and for the many laughs and memories shared when he and his family would get together. Most importantly as a husband, father, and grandfather, John will be remembered as a role model of integrity, courage, generosity, and kindness. He created a legacy of the many ways one can positively impact others by living virtuously. To a life of always treating others as he would want to be treated his family says, thank you and “Touche’!”
Survivors: John is survived by his wife Therese Wallace. His four children: John and his wife Lisa of Indianapolis; Emily Palmer and husband Jonathan of Indianapolis; Joe of Denver; Susan of San Francisco. He is also survived by his step-mother Brenda Wallace of Indianapolis:
his sister Jane LoDuca and husband Dominick of Indianapolis; his sister Martha (Fof) Simpson of Kalamazoo; his sister Lu Pennal and husband Stan Mikosz of Indianapolis; and his brother Andy Wallace and wife Heidi of Vero Beach, Florida; His grandchildren Lucy,

As a tribute to John, his family asks that you: observe a sunrise/sunset, take a hike in nature to enjoy the beauty around you, or make a daily intention to treat others as you would want to be treated.
