John James Maddrill, Iii

November 4, 1946 — January 20, 2022

Greenfield, IN

On Thursday, January 20, 2022, John James Maddrill III (Jim), loving husband, father of two, and grandfather of four, passed away at the age of 75 at Community North Hospital, in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Jim was born in Indianapolis on November 4, 1946, to John and Gladys (Williams) Maddrill. He grew up in Irvington where he attended T.C. Howe High School, graduating in 1965. In 1966 he married Vicki Lynn Vest, the love of his life and lifelong partner.

From 1966-1970 Jim served in the United States Air Force at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, DC, Grissom Air Force Base in Peru, IN and in the Philippines.  After the Air Force, he worked at Detroit Diesel Allison’s, retiring after 40 years of employment.

Jim attended First Church of the Nazarene his entire life. He truly loved his church and served in various capacities, including teen ministry, singing in the choir, serving on the board, helping with the food pantry, participating in multiple international mission trips, and playing Santa Claus for the Christmas programs. Jim and Vicki recently received “The Distinguished Service Award,” which is a lifetime award from First Church of the Nazarene. His church family and friends were very important to him.

The old adage “Make new friends, keep the old, some are silver, some are gold,” was the mantra of Jim’s life. His friendships ranged from early childhood through the present, and his home was always open to them.

Jim’s family will always miss his generous and selfless spirit, warm hugs, and sincere interest in their lives. Jim was a talented woodworker and blessed many of us with furniture and other creations that will be forever cherished.

Jim is survived by his wife, Vicki, two sons, John (Angie) Maddrill of Cincinnati, OH and David (Laura) Maddrill of Indianapolis, IN, four grandchildren, Jack, Oliver, Lucy, and Garrett Maddrill, two sisters Jean (Jim) Johnston of Greenfield, IN and Jane (John) Boyd of Bethlehem, PA, and stepmother, Mary Jane Maddrill of Indianapolis, IN. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Gladys Maddrill. He has many cousins, nieces, nephews, and other family members whom he has loved.
