John Joseph (Jack) Holmes, 94, died on March 17, 2018. He was born on January 2, 1924 in Terre Haute, IN to J. Edward and Alberta (Frizz) Holmes. His life of service began in the Army Air Corps as a staff sergeant and radio operator with the 486th Bomb Group, stationed in Sudbury England.
Upon returning from World War II, Jack acquired a Bachelor’s degree in education from Indiana State University and a Master’s degree from Butler University. He then loyally and happily served the Indianapolis Public School System for 40 years. Jack also enjoyed a long career with the IHSAA officiating high school and college basketball, football, and track and field events.
The strength and love of family, along with deep faith in God, was the foundation for Jack’s future with his bride of 64 years, Elnora Swaim. He is survived by his two daughters, Carol Forbes (Paul) and Kathy Sheek (Mike). He was preceded in death by his son J. Michael Holmes, and wife Elnora. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
Jack will be remembered by all for his loving spirit, generosity, kindness, and mischievous sense of humor. Happy St. Patrick’s Day, Dad. Touched ya last!
Visitation will be at Flanner and Buchanan in Broad Ripple on Tuesday, March 20, from 4-7pm.
Funeral mass will be at Christ the King church on Wednesday, March 21, at 10am.
