John H. Deig, 85, passed away unexpectedly on October 12, 2019. John was born June 25, 1934 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Sylvester and Genevieve Krempp Deig. He was a 1952 graduate of Mater Dei High School in Evansville, Indiana and a 1956 graduate of Evansville College (now University of Evansville). In high school John was active in baseball, basketball, and band. In college he was active in band and ROTC.
After college graduation he joined the United States Air Force as a Second Lieutenant and was stationed at Webb Air Force Base in Big Spring, Texas. It was there he learned to fly T33A T-bird airplanes. During his Air Force career, he married Nancy Jean Roberts on April 19, 1958. They resided in Texas until September of 1959 when the couple returned to Evansville, Indiana. In 1963, John and Nancy along with their family moved to Indianapolis, Indiana where John ultimately entered accountancy, working for Citizens Gas Utility and Wheaton Van Lines until his retirement in 1991.
John was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Nancy Roberts Deig; sister, Helen Deig; children, Steve, Stacy Hillock (Gary), Susan Rehl (John) and Scott (Sandy); and grandchildren, Cindy Hillock, Abby Hillock, Maggie (Ryan) Hodell, Matt Hillock, Cali Deig, Michael Frazier, Erick Frazier, and Shannon Frazier. He was also survived by many extended family members.
John was a devout Catholic who loved his family, was always happy and had a positive outlook. He never knew a stranger and enjoyed celebrating birthdays, holidays, and special events. Since 1973, John was an active parishioner at Christ the King Catholic Church of Indianapolis. He was an avid sports fan and loved coaching his children, especially in youth basketball and baseball. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He was also a member of both the funeral and parish choirs as well as a member of the Northside Knights of Columbus.
Visitation with be held on Wednesday, October 16, 2019 from 4:00pm – 8:00pm at Flanner Buchanan Broad Ripple with Rosary service beginning at 7:30pm. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 am on Thursday, October 17, 2019 at Christ the King Catholic Church (5884 Crittenden Avenue, Indianapolis). Friends may call one hour prior to the mass at the church. Interment to follow at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery (9001 Haverstick Road, Indianapolis. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be directed to Christ the King Catholic Church.
