John Edwin Scott, 84, of Carmel, died peacefully on March 24, 2021 after a brief, non-Covid illness. He was born to Agnes Kline on June 9, 1936 in Cleveland, Ohio. In August 1936, John was adopted by his parents, Hubert L. Scott and Anna M. (Shalloe) Scott of Columbus, Ohio. The Scotts were founding members of St. James the Less Catholic Parish, where John was part of the first, grade-school class to graduate. He also graduated from Holy Family High School before attending The Ohio State University. John met Donna J. Willey when they both worked at Fair Department Store in Columbus. They were married on August 11, 1956. John worked at Jaeger Machine Company, where he discovered a unique way to run punch cards, cutting inventory-taking overtime from a couple of days to a few hours. John was drafted into the Army in 1958 and served at Fort Gordon in Augusta, Georgia until 1960. He attained the rank of Sergeant and taught cryptography to soldiers. After he was discharged, John returned to Columbus and went to work for Pure Oil Company which was later purchased by Union 76. Union 76 transferred John to Indianapolis in 1970. The family settled in Carmel and became members of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish. John left Union 76 in the 1970’s and went to work selling semi-tractor-trailer trucks for Stoops Freightliner in Indianapolis. After retiring from Stoops in 1998, John maintained many friendships with colleagues and customers. He also acquired many friendships as a member of Wolf Run Golf Club. John was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Donna. He is survived by his children Terri Scott, Sherri (Bill) Stawick, and Mark (Tracey) Scott, his grandchildren Allison (Geoff) Baldwin, Katie Scott, Joey Scott, Abbey Stawick and Drew Stawick. John’s sister and brother-in-law Johanna and Larry Conti and their children Craig, Cathy and Chris also survive. John also leaves behind his second and final love in life, Nancy Burkhart. Other survivors include John’s cousins Jimmey Beggins, Dan Pelzer, Barbara Leahy,Chris Deardurff and Dennis, Jeff and John Kline.
Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 31st at the chapel of Our Lady of Peace Cemetery, 9001 Haverstick Road, Indianapolis. A funeral Mass will follow visitation at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in John’s memory to the Hamilton County Humane Society, 1721 Pleasant Street, Noblesville, Indiana 46060.
