John Edward Kalsbeck 89, of Zionsville, passed away March 7, 2017.
He could best be remembered by his warm, gentle, and generous spirit. John was a devoted husband of 57 years to his wife, Jackie. He received his undergraduate degrees in Chemistry and Philosophy from Calvin College. He received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Michigan and completed his medical residencies at University of Illinois, Chicago and Indiana University, followed by a fellowship at National Hospital at Queen Square—London, UK. He was a professor at Indiana University School of Medicine for 42 years and practiced as a pediatric neurosurgeon at Riley Hospital for Children. John adored working with children, and he established many lasting relationships with his patients.
In retirement, John took up glass blowing as a hobby. He also loved contemporary art, and was an avid golfer. He found tranquility in his time at Lake Michigan. John and his wife Jackie were Charter Members of John Knox Presbyterian Church.
John was preceded in death by his sister, Martina DeBoe.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jackie A. (Bartlett) Kalsbeck; children, Valerie (Dr. John) Pfaff, Dr. William Kalsbeck, Lisa (fiancé Retired Major General George Patrick) Kalsbeck; grandchildren, Adam (Brittany) Pfaff, Gregory Pfaff; and twin great-grandchildren, Grayson and Avery Pfaff.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 11th, at 11:30 am at John Knox Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall following the service.
Memorial contributions may be made in John Kalsbeck’s memory to Riley Children’s Foundation or the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.
