John E. Payne

John Edward Payne passed away on March 16, 2023, at the age of 73. John was born in Indianapolis, IN on July 3, 1949, to parents, Miles W. and Mary E. (Vandiver) Payne. He graduated from Howe High School, where he was a member of the ROTC Drill Team. John served his country honorably in the U.S. Army as a medic and during his career, he worked as an electrician, retiring in 2009. John was a member of the IBEW Local #481 for 48 years, serving as President for 15 years. He also served as Secretary and Treasurer of the IBEW Journeymen Retirees.

John was an avid golfer and dedicated fan of IU Basketball. He also enjoyed racing and organized the race pool every year during racing season. John was proud to have worked on the Circle of Lights every year since 1978. He was dubbed “Card Master” by his wife for the thoughtful and creative cards he made for those he loved each year.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Miles and Mary and sisters, Fran, Sandra K., and Helen Jean.

John is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Mary Ann (Raia) Payne; children: Brian Payne (Mary) and Sandra Martinez (Luis); 6 grandchildren; siblings: Chuck Payne, Linda Miller and Cinda Raia; as well as many extended family members and beloved friends.

Visitation will be held from 4pm until 8pm, Friday, March 24, 2023 at Flanner Buchanan – Washington Park East (10722 E. Washington St, Indianapolis), where funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 25, 2023, beginning at 11am. Burial will follow Saturday’s service in Washington Park East Cemetery.
