John Calvin Wyatt, 92, passed from this life to his heavenly home on Monday, March 27, 2017.
He was born on Aug. 6, 1924, in Petersburg, Ind. – the son of Charles and Nora Wyatt. He left the family farm in his late teens to find work in Indianapolis. In 1943 he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps as an airplane mechanic and served through the war’s end. During a furlough, he met Nora May Harvey at a party arranged by his sister Norma Jean. They were married on Aug. 8, 1945.
John briefly worked at the old Kingan’s meat-packing plant after the war. However, his life’s work was in glazing, both with Pittsburgh Plate Glass and Hoosier Glass. Among his projects were the City-County Building, banks, schools, university buildings, churches and shopping malls in Indianapolis, around the state and in neighboring states.
During a long, productive life, he taught Sunday school, drove a church bus, served in lay leadership with the Salvation Army, Castleview Baptist Church and Wheeler Mission, where he and his wife conducted regular services. She preceded him in death, along with his father and mother, older brother Charles and several step-sisters.
He is survived by all six of his children – Ken (GiGi), their children Erik, John and Linnea Strauss (Zach); Kathy; Don (Cathy) and their children Stephanie (Rick), Tom (Rachel) and Erin; Carolyn Polson (Bob, deceased) and their son Jon (Lindsay); Sue Micks (Norman, deceased) and their children Nicole Yavor (Jason) and Natalie Micks (Lance); David (Carmen) and their children Sam, Luke, Kelly and Emma – plus 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Norma Jean Kidwell; and a sister-in-law Ruth Kuhn.
The family appreciates the care given to our father in the last year of his life by the staff at Cumberland Trace in Plainfield.
Visitation will be held on Friday, March 31, 2017 at Flanner and Buchanan – Memorial Park from 5 -8pm. Funeral services will take place Saturday morning at 10am, also in the funeral home. Burial with military honors will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wheeler Mission.
