John "Brad" Schooley

April 30, 1945 — March 25, 2023

Indianapolis, IN

John Bradley Schooley, 77, passed away peacefully March 25, 2023, at his Indianapolis home. He leaves his wife of fifty-six years, Elizabeth (Libby) Hubbard Schooley; son, Bradley Thomas Schooley (Karin) of Shoreview, MN; daughter, Kathryn Elizabeth Fair of Murfreesboro, TN; and grandchildren, Luke Thomas Schooley, Clare Elizabeth Schooley, Alan Hugh Fair, Jr. and Owen Sanders Fair.

Brad was born April 30, 1945, in Kansas City, MO to John Thomas Malter Schooley and Mary Sanders Schooley. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Thomas Malter Schooley, Jr.

Brad graduated from Culver Military Academy (high school) as Regimental Commander in 1963. Brad attended Denison University where he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity, graduating in 1967 with a BA in Economics. Post- graduation, Brad married Libby, his high school sweetheart. After a honeymoon of camping and travel, the couple moved to East Lansing to attend Michigan State University, where Brad graduated with a Master of Education in History and Economics. Brad and Libby returned to Culver Military Academy in 1968, where he taught Economics and History. In addition to teaching, he was a guidance counselor and JV football coach, sharing his gifts for balanced advice and productive direction to young cadets of Culver Academy. In 1976, choosing to take those talents further afield, he applied and was accepted to Indiana University of Indianapolis Law school; remarkably passing the Indiana State Bar Exam prior to his Law School graduation and securing a position as Senior Trust Officer and in-house counsel for the LaPorte Bank and Trust, LaPorte, IN. He completed his law degree while working for the LaPorte Bank, graduating Magna Cum Laude in January 1978. Later that year, he accepted a position in private practice firm in Shelbyville, IN.  Seeking further success and experience in his law career, he pushed on to a commercial law firm in Indianapolis, IN until his retirement in 2010.

Brad’s passion for the Canadian wilderness was a very important part of his life. His love of fishing for walleye and lake trout, shore lunches on Girl Scout Island, eagle watching with his family and friends brought endless enjoyment and relaxation.  He perpetually planned his trips and looked forward to every summer at the family’s cabin on Sturgeon Lake, Ontario.
