Joanne Ellen Read, a cherished longtime resident of Indianapolis, passed away on November 3, 2024, at the age of 88, in Carmel, IN, at Wellbrooke of Carmel Nursing Home. Born on December 13, 1935, Joanne devoted her life to caring for others, a commitment she carried with her in her profession, and her family.
Joanne grew up in Oelwein, IA, and graduated from Oelwein High School before pursuing her calling in nursing. She completed her training at St. Mary's School of Nursing in Rochester, MN, then served as an RN in hospital settings. Later, she served as a dedicated nursing supervisor at New Hope of Indiana in Indianapolis for 10 years. After her nursing career, she turned her focus to family, spending her days raising her children and later caring for her beloved grandchildren. Joanne and her husband, Tom, shared over 54 years together in their home in the Greenbriar neighborhood on the northwest side of Indianapolis, a neighborhood they loved.
Family was the cornerstone of Joanne’s life. She is survived by her devoted husband, Tom Read; her son, Bryson Read and wife Leah; her daughter, Katie Thomas; her four treasured grandchildren; and close neighbors, Larry and Rachetta Kaseff. Joanne was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Laura Tousley; her brother, Fred Tousley Jr; and her grandson, Nolan Read.
A woman of warmth and generosity, Joanne found joy in reading, tending to her beautiful flower garden, and thoughtfully selecting Christmas gifts for her grandchildren—each a reflection of her love and attention.
In honor of Joanne's memory, contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Her family will celebrate her legacy privately, and her ashes will be laid to rest at Flanner & Buchanan Oaklawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Indianapolis. Joanne’s legacy of compassion and kindness lives on through her family and all those whose lives she touched.
