Joanne Jean Stevens, 81 from Indianapolis passed away early Monday after a struggle with cancer.
Joanne was born December 31, 1936 in Indianapolis. She was the daughter of Raymond F. and Helen E. Spry former owners of the Indiana Shade Company of Indianapolis.
Joanne graduated from Broad Ripple High School in 1953 and attended Indiana University Bloomington and Indiana University – Purdue University in Indianapolis. Joanne could easily be described as a music and animal lover, patriot and woman in Christ throughout her life. An accomplished singer and pianist, Joanne loved music – especially from the big band era through the 60’s. A dog and horse lover, she supported animal rescue and worked at Eastwood Animal Clinic early in her work career. Joanne retired from employment at the 3rd Army Logistics Readiness Group after 26 years at Fort Benjamin Harrison. She was a lifelong civilian supporter of the U.S. military. Joanne was an active member of Lawrence Church of the Nazarene and Victorious Life Church of the Nazarene for over 25 years and shared her love of Christ our Lord. She was very much involved in various Church Ministries: Angel Food Ministries, Food Pantry, Child Care Ministries, Vacation Bible School, and their Fall Festivals.
She is survived by her son, Jerry E. Stevens, Jr, and daughter in-law Gloria Gaddy-Stevens from Brownsburg, two grand children, Benjamin E. and Hannah J. Stevens of Indianapolis.
Family, friends and work associates who knew Joanne are invited for a celebration of Joanne’s life this Saturday at 11:30 am Victorious Life Nazarene Church, 9917 E. 46th. St. Indianapolis, IN 46235. She will be buried at Washington Park East Cemetery in a private ceremony. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Indianapolis Humane Society or her church.
