Joann S. Hawks

July 30, 1946 — November 12, 2024

Indianapolis

Indianapolis, Indiana – Joann Sue Hawks, 78, entered eternal rest on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, while comforted by her sons and loving husband, Craig Hawks. The world lost a beloved, jovial, sweet soul whose zest for life will forever be missed.

Joann was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, on July 30, 1946, to parents Everett & Vera (Plummer) Peterman. She earned her undergraduate degree from Purdue University before attending Butler University to achieve her master’s degree. She enjoyed serving as a guidance director and teacher at Warren Central High School during a career that spanned over forty years. She was a long-time supervisor for the Warren and Franklin Township 4-H Clubs, a member of the Marion County Fair Board, and a deaconess for Franklin Road Baptist Church, where she faithfully attended all her life.

Joann met her soul mate, Craig Hawks, while in junior high. They dated for nine years before finally marrying in 1968, and enjoyed nearly 57 years of marriage. Together they raised their sons and her pride and joy, Todd and Bradley, in a home centered on unconditional love and support.

Joann found joy and laughter attending each sporting event and musical performance. A profoundly creative woman, she was a prolific seamstress, sewing clothing and costumes for her family and loved ones. She was known for her clever crafting and generous gift-giving and was the ultimate hostess and planner, from after game parties to church dinners and family celebrations around the kitchen table. Joann found her strength through supporting her friends and family. She was fulfilled by loving others and through witnessing their joy and successes.

Joann is survived by her husband, Craig Hawks; sons Bradley O. Hawks (Javier Frechou) and Todd A. Hawks (Ben Rogers); brother Glen Peterman (Cheryl).

Visitation will be held on Monday, November 18, 2024, from 2 pm – 6 pm at Flanner Buchanan – Washington Park East (10722 East Washington Street, Indianapolis, Indiana, 46229). Additional visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, from 10 -11 am with funeral services following at 11 am.
