Jean Elaine Strouse

Jean Elaine Strouse passed peacefully on May29th. Born on March 05, 1924 in Boone County, she lived the majority of her life in Indianapolis. Jean married Calvin B Strouse on June 6, 1948 and they were married for 57 years before his passing. She was the loving mother of Richard K. Strouse, Janet E. Chmar and Randall L. Strouse. Survivors also include four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She was the daughter of Harry and Bessie Shelburne. While still known as Jean Shelburne, she graduated as class valedictorian from Washington High School in 1942. Jean felt fortunate to be able for her parents to afford to send her to Indiana University, despite the hard times of the Depression and WWII. Jean was a Kindergarten Teacher, at IPS 18, 100 and 48 including a total of 30 years. Her influence and memory were so good, parents and former students would often praise her when seeing her in public and she would respond in kind with the child and or parent’s names. Jean also received a Master’s Degree in Education from Butler University. Her favorite hobbies included reading, playing bridge and traveling. During her travels she would see folks who knew her. Jean and Calvin were charter members of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church and later Tabernacle Presbyterian. At her final residence, Robin Run, she was beloved for her sweet disposition and smile.
Visitation will be at 1:00pm followed by a service at 2:00 pm, on Sunday, June 2nd at Washington Park North which is located at 2706 Kessler Blvd. West Drive. . In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Tabernacle Presbyterian Church at 418 E. 34th.St. Indianapolis.
