Janice Jean (Jay) Shafer York

Janice Jean (Jay) Shafer York, 80 died on January 22, 2017 in Franklin, TN after a battle with Alzheimer’s.

An only child to Richard and Gladys Shafer, Jay was born on April 19, 1936 in Kokomo, IN. By 3 years old she became a student of dance and she continued dancing through her twenties, along with her sweet cousin, Jacky Lou, they were known as the Darling Sisters around the Midwest. She graduated from Kokomo High School where she was involved in Drama, music and cheerleading. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority and sang in the Purdue Glee Club. She married her sweetheart Bill that she met at Purdue University and soon became a mother to the late Richard York and Marla York Linder.

She loved to entertain and opened her home and pool to many parties! Involved in WINS, Republican Club, Precinct committeeman, Pike Township Board of Trustees, Indiana Pacers, Colts and loved Racing. Traveled the country with her husband watching Indy cars.

An avid snorkeler with many trips to the Caribbean with cherished friends. She swam with dolphin, sharks and stingrays.

She taught many children at her preschool that she ran for over 15 years.
Her greatest joy were her grandchildren, Sam and Wil.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Wilson “Bill” York. Daughter Marla (Fred) Linder, grandsons, Samuel and Wilson Linder.

Preceded in death, Richard Shafer, Gladys Shafer Carpenter, Lawrence (Carpy) Carpenter, Richard E. York.

Celebration of Life will be held at Flanner a Buchannan, Speedway on Saturday January 28, 2017. Visitation from 10-11am, Service at 11am and 4th of July Brunch immediately following.
