JANICE H. EWING

Age 92 was called home on Feb 12th, 2025. Jan’s fine spirit was brought into this world on November 7th, 1932.

Jan was born in Richmond, Indiana where she met her lifelong husband of 75 years, Robert “Bob” Ewing. Shortly after their union they welcomed their first two children, Rick and Jennifer in Richmond before moving to Buffalo, NY.

They later moved to Indianapolis where they raised Rick and Jennifer and welcomed two more children, Rob and Jeff.

While Jan’s favorite title was being a devoted mother and later a grandmother, she had an active career as an accountant for the family grocery business, a realtor and later at the Indiana State Senate. Upon retirement, Jan and Bob split their time between Sarasota, Florida and Indianapolis (snowbirds).

Jan enjoyed travelling and being outdoors. She traveled with her friends and family over the years visiting 40 of the 50 states and several other countries. She enjoyed hiking both locally and while travelling. Her favorite places to hike were in Victoria B.C and Washington State. She never shied away from a new adventure and shared her love of travel and the outdoors with her children and grandchildren.

Jan’s favorite place was Sarasota, Florida where she enjoyed the warm weather, hiking, the ocean and the company of her husband and close-knit group of friends. She and Bob returned to Indianapolis permanently in 2006 to be closer to family and friends. 

No matter how busy, Jan was always a faithful servant of the Lord. She volunteered her time helping the less fortunate at local food banks and other charitable activities although her favorite was working at the Ronald McDonald House. There she was able to help and comfort families as their children struggled with serious illnesses. Her natural loving spirit, welcoming smile and wisdom provided comfort for many families.

Jan was the matriarch of the Ewing family and her smile, laugh, spirit and hugs will be deeply missed by all, but she will now be reunited with her family and friends who have preceded her including mother and father Jewell and Walter Hayes, brother Walter (Buddy) Hayes, sisters Mary Holsinger and Juanita Harlen, son Rick Ewing and grandson Gary Ewing.

Jan is survived by her husband Bob Ewing, daughter Jennifer (Michael) Smith, sons Rob (Carla) and Jeff Ewing, grandsons Ricky, Craig and Blake Ewing, granddaughters Jennifer Clayton, Cyla (Omar) Lewis, Remi Ewing, and great grandchildren Cade, Cori and Caia Lewis and many other cousins, nieces and nephews.

A Visitation will be held on Friday, February 21, from 9:30am to 10:30am, with a Memorial Mass at 10:30am, at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 4600 N Illinois St, Indianapolis, IN 46208.
