JANICE BETH NELSON
Age 76, died peacefully while surrounded by family on February 14, 2017. She was the daughter of the late George and Lenora Hall and had been a lifetime resident of Indianapolis where she graduated with the first graduating class from North Central High School in 1958. An accomplished musician and vocalist she studied organ and piano performance at the Arthur Jordan School of Music, directed her Church’s choir for several years and performed as part of the Messenger’s Trio, a Christian music group.
Jan was a faithful employee of the Indianapolis Life Insurance Company for 42 years where she became the Manager of the Sales & Agency Department. In her retirement she was an officer and member of the Board of Directors of the East 91st Street Christian Church Foundation. As a devoted Christian from the time of her childhood, Jan was a member of East 49th Street Christian Church where she became the organist, later became a member and the choir director at Antioch Christian Church and the returned to East 91st Street Christian Church for many years. She was always generous and caring for her family and friends.
Jan is survived by her high school sweetheart and husband of 53 years, Richard Lee Nelson, her brother, Steven (Cindy) Hall of Indianapolis and her sister, Sharon Johnson of Decatur, Illinois. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Gary (Sue) Nelson of Carmel and sister-in-law, Vicki (Dave) Slosson of Fort Wayne. She has six nephews and three nieces to whom she showed tremendous love and devotion; George (Stacey) Hall, Margaret Lenora Hall, Bethany Janice Hall, Geoffrey (Natalie) Nelson, Melissa (Jamie) Saddler, Michael (Bridget) Slosson, Joshua (Sarah) Slosson, Steven Smith and Russell (Deane) Smith along with one great nephew and six great nieces. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brother-in-law, John Johnson.
A service for Jan will be held at East 91st Street Christian Church, 6049 East 91st Street, Indianapolis, on Monday, February 20, 2017 at Noon with calling prior to the service beginning at 10:00 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to East 91st Street Christian Church Foundation.
