Janet Lorraine Keith

Janet Lorraine Keith, 95, of Indianapolis, passed away May 1, 2020 after contracting COVID-19. She was born on June 18, 1924 on the southside of Indianapolis, Indiana as the daughter of Robert M. and Adeline (Hicks) McKay. Janet was a graduate of Southport High School in 1943. While there she was an active volunteer in social activities, was a member of the Sub-Deb Club, and President of the Girls Athletic Association.  As part of the Sub-Deb Club she was on the L.S. Ayres Fashion Council for teen girls. During WWII Janet was a member of the Indianapolis Service Men’s Club. She worked in civil service jobs at the State Fairgrounds and the Finance Center at Fort Benjamin Harrison. In 1947, Janet was married to the love of her life Everett at Tabernacle Presbyterian Church. She worked several different jobs while he went to college. They were active members of the church and enjoyed square dancing. Janet was a 75 year member of the Southport Chapter of the Eastern Star. She was a member of Tabernacle Presbyterian Church for over 70 years. At church she was on the first board of Deaconesses, taught in the Kindergarten Department for a number of years, was in the Women’s Circles and in later years was a “Chimer” stuffing bulletins. She even worked at the church for a short time, in the office. Janet was very sociable and always had a smile for everyone she met. She will be dearly missed by all her family and friends. Janet is survived by her children: Nancy Gordon (William) of Indianapolis, Phillip Keith (Karen) of Rosedale, IN, as well as her granddaughters Kara McGarvey (Karl) and Sarah Keith; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Everett L. Keith; and siblings Mildred Orme, Robert McKay, Charles McKay, and Virginia Hines; and her special friend Jay Mount. A private graveside service will be held at Washington Park East Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
