INDIANAPOLIS – Janet Rongey Cabel, 87, of Indianapolis passed away on June 12, 2022 due to complications from congestive heart failure. She was born Janet Lee Rongey on June 10, 1935 to Derwood and Frances Rongey in Granite City, Illinois. While growing up in Granite City, Janet attended Granite City High School and graduated in 1953. She continued her education, attending Indiana University (Bloomington), graduating with a B.S. in Physical Education in 1957. She was also a member of the Sigma Kappa sorority. She later earned her Masters Degree in Physical Education in 1970. While attending classes at IU she met her husband James (Jim) Cabel of Washington, IN. They were married in Beck Chapel the day after final exams, on June 1, 1957. Jim and Janet would eventually move to Indianapolis, where she would begin her professional career as an educator, teaching Physical Education and Health in MSD Warren Township. Over the next 30 years, Janet taught and coached girls sports at several schools, including Moorehead Elementary, Woodview Jr. High, Stonybrook Jr. High, and Warren Central High School. She was respected by many, mentoring students and young adults throughout her career. Janet had another love in her life, snow skiing. She and Jim took many trips to Colorado, Utah and Idaho. The other half of the year was usually spent thawing out on the beach in Siesta Key, FL or having a magical day in Disney World. Janet loved to travel and was always ready for the next adventure with family and friends. Janet attended Church of the Nativity Episcopal church in Indianapolis. She and Jim were active members for several years, cultivating many friendships and their faith in Christ. Janet is survived by her loving children, daughter Jill Cabel (Jimmie Bruhn), son Christopher Cabel (Karen) and her grandchildren Nicholas Cabel and Quinn Cabel, step-grandchildren Kaleigh Bruhn and Andrew Bruhn, and step-great grandson Oliver Upton. She is also survived by her brother, Craig Rongey, as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Janet is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jim Cabel, and her sister Linda Rongey Baker. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 12, 2022 from 4-8PM at Flanner Buchanan-Memorial Park, 9350 E. Washington St. A funeral service will be held the following day at 10AM at Church of the Nativity, 7300 Lantern Road, Indianapolis, IN. 46256.
