Carmel, IN

Jan Edward Helbert of Carmel, Indiana, passed away on August 1st, 2024, in his home, at the age of 84.

He was born in Fortville, Indiana, on December 08, 1939, to his biological parents, Robert (Bob) and Joyce (Heche) Helbert, who later remarried to Merle Fisher, for whom he held great admiration. Jan graduated from Fortville High School in 1957 and subsequently, Indiana University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. He earned a law degree from Indiana University and served in the armed forces (Army, then Navy) for six years. Jan began his law career as a deputy prosecutor (Marion County, IN) and became a public defender. He practiced criminal law in various private firms as well as a sole practitioner. Jan later focused his career primarily with real estate development and helping to grow many local and Midwest businesses as a real estate attorney, in total, having practiced law for 45 years. He served as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Indiana School of Medicine and taught Medicine and the Law. He received a Commendation from Governor Robert D. Orr(Indiana) for serving 11 years as a Counselor for the State of Indiana Utility Commission. Jan had a great love for pets, especially his dogs, Buddy and Missy and recently adopted “Lucky”.

Jan was known for being the unofficial team coach for his children’s sports, including hockey, baseball, basketball and soccer. He enjoyed tennis, golfing, fishing, and poker with his friends. He obtained a pilot license and enjoyed flying his Cessna plane in his earlier years. Jan was a simple, unselfish man who helped many people through the years. He volunteered and sat as a judge in Marion Superior (Criminal Division) Court and volunteered for fund raisers for Carmel High School. Jan married Rebecca(“Becky”)(Hampton) who together, spent 51 wonderful years. She preceded him in death. He is survived by children, Erik Helbert, Tyler Helbert and Weston (Toni) Helbert, as well as his sister Linda (Helbert) Baxter. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kristin Helbert. Jan had many close friends, too many, unfortunately, to list. Anyone and all who wish to donate in memory of Jan Helbert, please consider any contribution of time or donation to the Indiana (or Indianapolis/Hamilton County) Humane Society. May God bring His everlasting peace and comfort to this wonderful man and to all who knew loved him.
