James Richard Dawson

James Richard Dawson,

92, of Indianapolis, passed away on November 13, 2019. He was born on February 27, 1927 in Mattoon, Illinois to the late Deo O. and Georgia (Endsley) Dawson.

James was a graduate of Howe High School in 1944 and went on to work as the chief architectural project for American Consulting Engineers, Inc, (now American Structurepoint).  During his time there he was actively involved in all aspects of architectural design studies to the development of final construction documents and review of shop drawings. Through ownership of his own construction company for fifteen years, twenty-seven years in the architectural field, and operating his own drafting service, he served many architects and engineers in Indiana. He accumulated the experience necessary to create the varied architectural styles and facilities of today, utilizing technology and construction methods of the time. He was directly involved in projects such as: Springdale Church of the Nazarene, Lake Clearwater Office Building, Firestone Research and Development, Schwitzer Division Research and Development, Mallory Controls, Union Laundry Lofts Condominiums, Pine Lake Shopping Center, and Ball State Gym.

He also volunteered at the Community East Hospital Cancer Center, where he was known to patients and other volunteers as, “Uncle Jim.” The family would like to send a special thank you to the doctors and staff there for the excellent care they showed to James.

James is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Evelyn Dawson; his son, Rich Dawson, granddaughter, Deirdre, his brother, Deo Dawson, and sister, Rosemary Dawson. He is survived by his son, James, Sr. (Diane), his grandchildren: Jonah (Crystal), Jimmy, Tim (Jessalyn), and Joey Ell; his great-grandchildren: Christian, Chloe, Colton, Cinda, Tish, Kody, Elijah, Cody, Logan, Tim Jr., Ethan, Brooklyn, Brayden, Eli, and Hayden; and his great-great-grandsons, Braxton and Charlie.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 17, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Flanner Buchanan – Washington Park East, 10722 East Washington Street, Indianapolis. A funeral service will follow on Monday, November 18, at 11:00 a.m. the funeral home.
