James Louis Peterec

March 10, 1943 — January 2, 2025

INDIANAPOLIS - James Louis Peterec, 81, passed away peacefully on January 2nd, 2025. He was able to spend this last snowy Christmas surrounded by his devoted loved ones as he had his entire life, celebrating family and joy.

Born to Alice and Thomas Peterec in 1943 in St. Louis, Missouri - he attended Ben Davis HS in IN, the University of Cincinnati, OH and Purdue University, IN for degrees in Psychology and Engineering studies. These fields were reflected both in his deep sense of humanity and generous nature in lending a helping hand to everyone he met, human and animal. As well as applying his mechanical aptitude to an ongoing love of “tinkering,” as evidenced by his overflowing garage workshop and gadgets.

His father’s work in aviation had his family moving around the Midwest, but his formative years were spent in Speedway, IN. The nearby Indianapolis 500 racetrack was a perfect environment to spark his additional love of cars and anything else with wheels. An old B+W photo of an impromptu jazz session with him playing the clarinet is no surprise, as he was a lover of music in any form, attending many a concert. He could have happily had a second career as a Conductor.

He served in the US Air Force attaining the rank of Captain. This instilled in him a lifelong love of Flight, and he became an experienced pilot taking to the skies around the world. His military career allowed him to enjoy travel both in the air and on the road, always open to the next new adventure. He would share that his greatest adventure was meeting his wife while serving at Clark Air Force Base.

After leaving the service, and a several decades-long, diverse career in retail management, his well-earned retirement saw him devote more time to what he enjoyed. This was helping his neighbors in the community, joining his friends at Silver Sneakers for a workout and a conversation, and as a volunteer at his church, St. Ann’s. There he established himself as part-time “groundskeeper” helping trim the trees and shrubbery around the church.

James is survived by his loving wife of 50+ years Marciana, his son James, JR and daughter Marchele, his younger brother Samuel and his extended family overseas. He was a devoted father, loving husband, and caring brother. He was met in heaven by his parents, Alice and Thomas Peterec, his elder brother Thomas JR, his younger sister Susan, and his beloved pets.

An extremely kindhearted soul, he dealt with each challenge with a strong sense of optimism, hope and an even stronger sense of humor. His generously shared wisdom, energy and smile will be remembered by all who knew him. His hugs and laughter will be incredibly missed.

A private service was held Thursday, January 9th at his final resting place at the Washington Park North Cemetery, IN. A donation in James’ memory may be made to St. Ann’s Church at 6350 S. Mooresville Road, Indianapolis, IN, 46221.
