James George O'Donnell, born on May 1, 1935, to Thomas and Margaret O'Donnell, passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones. He was 89 years old.
James was predeceased by his parents, his beloved sisters Rita Baker and Margaret Griffen, and his wife of 40 years, Charlene. He is survived by his brother, Thomas O'Donnell, his sister, Joan Maloney, his cherished son, James O'Donnell, his daughter-in-law, Carri, and his four beloved grandsons, Noah, Dylan, Colin, and Finnegan.
A dedicated educator and principal, James spent many years serving the community of East Chicago, where he led Benjamin Franklin Elementary and Carrie Gosch Elementary schools. He later concluded his career at St. John Bosco School in Hammond, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, leadership, and commitment to the betterment of his students.
In addition to his work in education, James was a proud member of the Army Reserves. He graduated from East Chicago Roosevelt and went on to earn his degree from Indiana University, marking the beginning of his lifelong dedication to learning and service.
James will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family, his students, and his community. His legacy of service and leadership will live on in the countless lives he touched throughout his career and personal life.
A funeral mass will be held at St. John Bosco Catholic Church, 1231 171st Pl., Hammond, IN 46234, at 11:00 am on September 21, 2024.
