James "Larry" Waldroup

May 27, 1951 — December 28, 2020

Robbinsville, NC

James “Larry” Waldroup, 69, of Robbinsville, North Carolina, formerly of Greenfield and New Palestine, IN passed away December 28th, 2020 after a brief terminal illness.

Larry was a hardworking man, who enjoyed an adventure,  an opportunity to laugh, and the opportunity to make others laugh.  His sense of humor will be the source of memories for many of his family and friends.  Generous, sometimes to a fault, Larry had high standards for himself and those closest to him, and encouraged everyone to be the best version of themselves.  Over the years Larry had various hobbies and enjoyed horses, riding his motorcycle, and spending time on his boat.  He had moved from Indiana to Robbinsville, North Carolina, and was happy to tell anyone who would listen about how blessed he was to live amidst the majestic beauty of the Great Smoky Mountains.

A source of pride, Larry served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam war. While he may not have spoken about the details of his service to many,  Larry was an unwavering patriot and instilled a duty to country in both of his children.

Larry was also enthusiastic about his career as a wastewater treatment consultant spanning more than 30  years.  While he had tried his hand at retirement a few times, he could not resist the challenge and adventure that came with his work.  He continued working up until a few weeks before his death.  Always in motion and interested in the next challenge, Larry’s last  job had him traveling around the country, and he was always excited about visiting a new city no matter how small or large.

Larry is survived by his daughter Lacinda (Robert) Coughlan, and son James Jason (Melissa) Waldroup; one grandchild; siblings Nettie Hogue-Spilman (Derek), Shelia Bolton, Marietta Senter (Kevin), Mike Waldroup, and David Waldroup (Rustina); his former spouse Mary (Petrey) McCoy;  and numerous family members, nieces, nephews, and cousins from Indiana and North Carolina, whom he loved  and enjoyed spending time with.

He is preceded in death by his parents James R. and Mary V. (Crawford) Waldroup and by his wife Leslie (Kidwell) Waldroup.

During his final days, Larry took comfort in knowing he was going to meet his maker and was looking forward to that opportunity.  Nonetheless, Larry will be missed by his family and friends.  Before his passing he asked his children to remind others to remember him with laughter and smiles.  He will be laid to rest at Washington Park East Cemetery.

Larry’s visitation will be Saturday, January 9th, at 2pm, at Flanner Buchanan Washington Park East; followed by a 3pm graveside service at Washington Park East Cemetery. Flanner Buchanan and Larry’s family encourage all guests to wear masks and socially distance. We want everyone to remain safe and healthy.

Larry’s children plan on hosting a celebration of life at a later date, when everyone is safe to gather and hug again.
