James K. Buchanan Sr., 84 of New Palestine, IN passed away November 22, 2019. Jim was born to the late Frank Bright and Era Jane Creasey Buchanan in Indianapolis, IN on May 27, 1935.
Through all of life’s endeavors, Jim had the love of his life by his side, Anita Walton Buchanan.
Jim graduated from Arsenal Technical High School in 1952. Shortly after he joined the Army where he spent 22 years and retired in 1977 at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Jim served as a Military Intelligence Special Agent and spent 11 months in Vietnam as a Counter Intelligence Agent earning the Bronze Star Medal while supporting the Military Assistance Command Studies and Observation Group (MAC-SOG). After his military retirement he went to work for the US Post Office (20 years) and Hancock County Reserve Sheriff’s Department (17 years) retiring from both. He also worked for Homeland Security.
On November 7th 1952 he married Anita L. Walton, his high school sweetheart. They spent 64 years together until her passing in 2016. They had 5 wonderful children that they devoted their lives to raise.
Jim studied Criminal Justice at Indiana University and was a longtime fan of IU Basketball and Bobby Knight. He was an Indianapolis Colts season ticket holder from their first year in Indy until his death. He was an avid collector of old military/war items and enjoyed participating in Civil War reenactments with his family. Jim was a member of the Masonic Lodge, American Legion and the National Rifle Association.
Jim is survived by his children, Theresa Smith, Rosezella (Steve) Gorby, James Jr. (Jennifer) Buchanan, Steven (Gena) Buchanan, Kenneth (Angie) Buchanan. He is survived by 11 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Jim was predeceased by two sisters.

Visitation will be held on Friday, December 6, 2019 from 4 to 8PM with a Masonic Service to begin at 7:30PM. Funeral services will be held the following day on Saturday, December 7, 2019 at 11AM, all will be held at the Indiana War Memorial, 55 E. Michigan St. Indianapolis, IN 46204. Burial to follow at Washington Park East Cemetery.
