James T. Johnson passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 24th, 2024. He was born July 18th,1933, to Leland and Renetta Johnson in Vincennes IN.
The 2nd of 6 children, he attended St. Joan of Arc Catholic grade school and Cathedral High school. Shortly after graduation he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he served in the Korean War. After deployment, he returned home and attended Marian Collage where he met Diane M. McCrocklin. They married and soon had 5 children.
Construction was a passion for Jim, and he eventually joined R.V. Welch Associates which later became Browning Investments. He led their construction division for 27 years, reshaping the skyline of Carmel and Indianapolis with many large building projects over those years.
Having completed his final project with Browning, Pan Am Plaza in 1987, Jim left on the marine adventure of a lifetime the Great Loop. Navigating down the Ohio and Mississippi rivers crossing Florida thru lake Okeechobee traveling up the East coast to New York Harbor. Following the Hudson and Erie canal crossing Lake Ontario into Canada and then arriving at the narrows of Mackinac, He traveled down lake Michigan to Michigan City for the winter.
In 1988, Jim started J.T. Johnson Associates, a small construction and real estate investment firm which he ran until retirement in 2017. Over those 30 years he continued his passion, building projects in Indiana and the surrounding states. His work was punctuated by many trips on his boat, which he piloted with friends and family, from its home marina on the Ohio river down to the Florida Keys for the winter. As he sails off into the sunset, let's all raise a glass and wish him Bon Voyage.
A Visitation for Jim will be held on Monday, December 2, from 10 am to 12 noon, with a Memorial Service to follow at 12 noon, at Flanner Buchanan - Broad Ripple, 1305 E. Broad Ripple Ave., Indianapolis, IN 46220. Jim's Final Resting Place will be at Washington Park North Cemetery.
