James "Jim" Douglas Hammons

James “Jim” Douglas Hammons, 63, of Greenfield, Indiana passed away surrounded by his family on December 12, 2018. He was born June 11, 1955 to James A. and Dorothy J. Hammons; he was one of two sons.

Jim was a 1973 graduate of Decatur Central High School. He worked 20 years as an optometry technician in Martinsville, Indiana until the business closed. He then worked as a truck driver, working for Eby-Brown nearly 20 years until his health kept him from being active. Jim loved woodworking, watching Andy Griffith, but mostly he loved spending time with his family. His daughter, Thearasa, describes him as a great dad who made life fun. He instilled the importance of family. It was important to Jim to spend time with family, especially ensuring his daughter visited with her grandparents. He was a Mr. Fix it, who was vibrant and willing to help anyone in need. Jim loved hard and admired those who reciprocated those values. His passing leaves an empty space in the hearts of those who were lucky enough to meet him; he was truly one of a kind.

He is preceded in death by his parents, James A. and Dorothy J. Hammons. Surviving to cherish his memory are daughter, Thearasa (Phil) Coffey; brother, Dennis (Lovedas) Hammons; grandchildren, Taylor, Skylar, and Madison; nephews, Josh and Nick; as well as a host of extended family members and friends.

Family and friends are invited to visit Saturday, December 15 from 11-12 PM at Flanner Buchanan – Decatur Township, 5463 Kentucky Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46121. A celebration of Jim’s life will take place at 12 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Shelby County Animal Shelter, 705 Hale Rd, Shelbyville, IN 46176. Jim had a soft spot for stray animals; your contributions would be a great avenue to show support to his family during this time.
